Holland may not be world-renowned for its cuisine, but traditional Dutch dishes do exist. These are mainly heavy stews with slow-cooked, tender meat with vegetables and potatoes such as hutspot, boerenkoolstamppot, and hete bliksem. The Dutch also voracious eaters of pancakes and will eat them for dinner as well as for breakfast. Traditionally, the Dutch have excellent dairy products, their most well-known cheeses include Gouda and Edam and other lesser known cheeses are made with herbs and spices such as cloves, cumin, caraway, or nettle.
Indonesia was a former colony of the Netherlands and fortunately has left its indelible mark on cuisine. Nasi Goreng is delicious rice dish with chicken or pork and spices and has found its way onto Dutch plates. Try out local favourite Sari Citra, Ferdinand Bolstraat 52 and make sure you get a small sampling of many of the different dishes. Of course, in Amsterdam almost any kind of cuisine is available from Chinese to Italian, Mexican to Indian and many, many more. The city is riddled with cosy cafes offering a superb light lunch or dinner such as sandwiches and soups or sweet afternoon snack like cakes and apple tarts. There are also the ubiquitous street vendors serving heavy snacks like chips and mayonaise and frickandel (a fried sausage). Be forewarned that dinner is served particularly early, and you can easily dine at 5pm.
