Amsterdam, bars restaurant & club guide>
Barsin Amsterdam
Amsterdam is known for its nightlife and the bar scene is one of the best in the world. Dutch bars in the winter will warm you to the core, offering a cosy atmosphere to escape the rain or snow. Some bars tolerate pot smoking, but most do not- you are better off visiting a coffee shop. In the summertime, there are plenty of bars and cafes with outdoor seating especially around the Central Station. The Dutch are traditionally a beer drinking people, with Heineken and Grolsch being the most exported and therefore best known outside the Netherlands. For those looking for a little local flavour, try a bruin café (brown bar) or Proeflokaal: quintessentially Dutch institutions filled with good spirits, alcohol and unpretentious décor and possibly a veneer of cigarette smoke (lending to the name brown café). The beer is served with a large head of foam the way the Dutch like it. Holland is also known to produce some strong liquors and these include jenever and brandewijn, kandeel (from white wine), kraamanijs (like sambuca ) and oranjebitter (orange brandy, for festivities) to name just a few. Triple Sec is probably the most well known Dutch liquor.
