The Amstel river's name comes from Aeme stelle, old Dutch for "area full of water". The river ends at Spui square (once the river was diverted in 1936), and is connected to IJ bay through subterraneous pipes. A big concert is held every year on Bevrijdingsdag (Liberation Day) on the river. Head of the River Amstel and Heineken Roeivierkamp rowing races are held annually on the Amstel. The river also forms part of the route of the Canal Parade, Amsterdam's annual floating gay pride parade. Crisscrossed by three main bridges at the Dutch capital, the river is lined with important buildings such as the Stopera City Hall, Opera house and Carré theatre. Amstel beer is also named after the river. The Amstel brewery was situated close to the Amstel river, and the water from the river was used to cool the beer.
