Dam Platz
Dam Square ("Dam Platz"), also known as the Dam, is the main town square in the centre of Amsterdam . It is located in the heart of the historical centre of Amsterdam , south of the main transportation hub, Centraal Station. The dam was constructed in 1270 and served as a link to the two settlements on either side of the river as the city spread from this central core. This eventually became the main location for commerce and the local government. Lining the plaza are stately buildings including the neoclassical Royal Palace, which served as the city hall from 1655 until it was converted into a royal residence in 1808. Next door is the 15th-century Gothic Nieuwe Kerk ( New Church ). On the opposite side of the square stands the National Monument, a white stone pillar erected in 1956 as a memorial to the victims of World War II. This large rectangular plaza is the endpoint of important streets such as Nieuwendijk, Kalverstraat and Damstraat. A short distance beyond the northeast corner lies the main street of the red-light district, de Wallen.
