In 1876, Pierre Cuypers won the design contest for the new Rijksmuseum building after the 1863 contest failed to produce an adequate design. Cuypers’ design incoporates gothic and renaissance elements, and pays homage to the history of Dutch art. More contests were held for the sculptures, tiles and stained glass design which decorated the building. The museum finally opened in 1885. The building is located on Stadhouderskade and more famously, on the Museumplein, neighbouring the Van Gogh and Stedelijk Museums . Another wing was added to the museum in 1890 which inluded fragments of demolished buildings representing varied Dutch architecture. Until 2010, it will be restored based on a design by Spanish architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz. During this time only a few pieces will be on display from the permanet collection in an exhbition called The Masterpieces.
