Van Gogh museum
The Van Gogh Museum features the works of the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh and his contemporaries. It has the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings and drawings in the world. One of Holland ’s most beloved artists, Van Gogh used bright colours and bold brush strokes which seem to churn in movement on the canvas. His early art was mainly in sombre colours until he became influenced by Impressionism in Paris. From this he developed his unique and high recognizeable style which developed into Expressionism, a movement of which he was a pioneer. (For those who are curious, the ear came off after a fall out with his friend and fellow painter, Paul Gauguin and marked the beginning of a downward spiral into mental illness.) The main exhibition chronicles the stages of Van Gogh's life, from his childhood to up until his death. Highlights include The Potato Eaters, Bedroom in and one of the three Sunflowers paintings with a yellow background. The museum is located in Museumplein ( Museum Square ) in Amsterdam .
