Villes St.Nicolaas illuminated at night
The Sint Nicolaaskerk (Church of St. Nicholas) is a Roman Catholic church in the centre of Amsterdam. St. Nicholas is the patron saint of sailors, which makes perfect sense when you consider Holland's maritime history. The church is in the city centre and is located very near Centraal Station and also flanks the Red Light district. It was originally a Catholic church but was used by Protestants for a number of years until 1795 when Catholic were again permitted to worship. The architect, Bleijs (1842-1912) designed the church using a combination of several revival styles including neo-Baroque and neo-Renaissance. The facade is crowned by two towers and has a stained glass rose window which is spectacular when viewed from inside on a sunny day. The church still has an active parish and boasts 3 choirs, 2 of which sing every Saturday at 5pm.
